Server and Domain Name are necessary before your site will appear on the internet. I can arrange this for $50 a year including the domain name or you can make your own arrangements. Web site maintenance and updating are also available. Maintenance fees cover adding new items to existing pages (such as for sale), changing images on the home page quarterly. This does not include any reformatting of pages, adding new pages, restructuring of pages, color changes, redesigns of any art work, etc. Maintenance may be paid per item, monthly, or annually. Per item fees start at $15, monthly fees start at $20 per month, and annual payments get one month free (pay 11 months get the 12th free). Monthly fees are based on projected changes to the site. If you are going to have limited changes/additions to your pages a per item fee may be best. Updating on an annual, or other scheduled basis is also available. This may include some re-adjusting, substitution, or additions to your site. Additional pages start at $50 depending on the complexity. Other work is priced according to the time involved, please ask.
Having A Web Site Built Having a successful web site built requires a lot of you as well as the designer. You will need to stay in close contact with the designer throughout the process. You will need ‘good’ photos, the text you want on the site, plus arrangements for the server space and domain name. Considerations for the new web site owner are great and the help of a professional designer will help ease the demands. There are many people offering to build web sites, but there is much more to it than just creating the pages and putting them on the world wide web. Other than finding a designer who creates the kind of work you like, you will need someone who understands search engine criteria and can help you with all other details associated with putting up a site and having it seen by others. Your site will do you little good if people can’t find it. Also remember, so many of the sites look basically the same. You will do better with your site if it is distinctly different. You want people to ‘recognize’ your site and logo instantly. First you must plan way ahead. Pictures are best if the donkeys have been clipped, but pictures taken shortly after they have shed their winter coats work pretty well. So pictures are a Spring/Summer project. But don’t overlook the fact that it takes the search engines 4 to 6 months to start picking up your site. People who “type in” your address will be able to access your site right away but those who do a search, such as “miniature donkeys for sale” will not see your site listed until more than 160 pages into the search. If your site is designed correctly you will be on the first 10 pages or so after 4 to 6 months on the Web. It takes the search engines that long to collect data on your site. So if you are wanting the site for your 2008 foals you need to start preparing by summer 2007. This does not matter who puts your site up for you!! Of course, you can pay the main search engines a couple hundred dollars each for advanced standing and eliminate the delay (supposedly). The people I know who have done this were NOT happy with the results. Graphics, including logos, are what sets one site apart from another. This a part of ‘branding’ if you have heard the term used in marketing. This can be carried through with matching business cards, farm banner, etc. to maximize branding. For this reason it’s good to get a web designer who can do it all for you. If you want a truly unique and distinctly identifiable site, give the graphics due consideration. If you are having graphics done by someone other than the web designer the graphics should be done before the web designer begins work.
Step-by-Step
1) find a designer who’s work you like and who has the time to give your site the attention it deserves 2) plan way ahead, to allow the search engines time to do their thing 3) make sure the designer knows how to please the search engines 4) consider using a designer who can help you with a complete marketing plan 5) make the arrangements for web hosting (server space) and domain name 6) if you want special graphics work (such as a logo), make arrangements (most web designers do not do this work and if they do there is an extra charge) 7) get your photos together, a web site will never look better than the photos 8) plan to stay in close contact with the designer once work begins 9) whatever you do, don’t hire someone based just on price
